Educating Bigmouth
"Educating Bigmouth" was an episode that appeared in Season 5 of the Smurfs cartoon show.
Summary
The story begins at Bigmouth's home. Bigmouth is busy eating, while Bignose is reading a romantic novel as she cooks. Bignose laments, "Bigmouth have no romance, Bigmouth have no manners, Bigmouth have no future! Bignose go home, not come back - ever!" Bigmouth asks, as she leaves, "Bignose - what wrong?"
Meanwhile, in the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf is settling down to sleep, and blows out his candle for a nice night's rest. Instead of peace and quiet, he hears screaming and wailing in the distance. All of the Smurfs, and the Smurflings are gathered in the center of the village in their nightclothes with lanterns. They want to know what the awful sound is. Sassette thinks it may be a monster. Nat thinks it could be a wounded forest animal. Papa Smurf asks the Smurfs not to jump to conclusions - they decide to investigate. They discover Bigmouth crying, alone, in the forest glen. Smurfette asks, "Oh Papa Smurf is there anything we can do?" Papa Smurf decides to help - if only so they can all get some sleep once Bigmouth stops crying. Papa Smurf tells Bigmouth to go home and get some rest - they will begin lessons first thing in the morning.
The next day, Poet Smurf volunteers to teach Bigmouth how to speak romantically. Vanity offers to teach him manners. Brainy offers to share from his book, "Brainy Smurf's Secrets to a Successful Future". Papa Smurf tells Hefty he will need his help too. First, Hefty and Bigmouth do exercises. Papa Smurf says, "Bigmouth will find a little exercise builds the spirits as well as the muscles". Next up, Bigmouth takes a bath. After that, Poet teaches the art of speaking romantically. Poet explains that poems are a good way to convey romance. Bigmouth comes up with the poem, "Bigmouth love for Bignose grows, almost as big as Bignose nose!" Finally, Bigmouth has a nice breakfast - while Vanity explains table manners. Vanity is disgusted by the raspberry jam on Bigmouth's face. He decides to skip table manners, and concentrate on how to walk "with elegance, style and grace". Finally, Brainy tells Bigmouth to get an occupation - a job with the Duke. He says the best way to impress royalty is to smile a lot, and stand up straight, except when bowing. Bigmouth gets a job controlling the castle bridge and gate - although he does it very poorly.
Finally, the Smurfs prepare the coup de grĂ¢ce - flowers picked by Hefty and candy in a heart shaped box made by Greedy (and wrapped by Jokey). Poet is making a love poem for Bigmouth to give to Bignose.
Meanwhile, Smurfette and Sassette go to talk to Bignose. Smurfette believes, using her "deeper feelings and stronger emotions" plus special powers of intuition, that Bignose and Bigmouth will make up - and that Bignose feels much worse than Bigmouth does. When the two arrive at Bignose's home, instead of looking sad, Bignose is happily wooed by Bigteeth, another ogre. He gives her a flower and says, "a rose for your nose, oh dainty one". At the same time, Bigmouth appears with his gifts for Bignose. Bigmouth sees the two, and Bignose says, "Bigteeth going to take Bignose to dance". Bigmouth leaves brokenhearted, and Bigteeth mocks him as he departs. Bignose has a change of heart and says, "Bigmouth nice, Bigteeth stupid".
Bignose pursues Bigmouth and says, "Bignose sorry if Bigmouth sorry", and the two reconcile happily.
