Gargamel's Giant

"Gargamel's Giant" was an episode that appeared in Season 4 of the Smurfs cartoon show.

Plot Summary

The episode opens with Gargamel digging in the dirt in search of something, while Tuffy, Greedy, Smurfette, and Hefty are secretly observing. Azrael finds them and chases them to a tree. He nearly catches Tuffy until Hefty intervenes and saves him, resulting only in Hefty's pants getting ripped. Meanwhile, Gargamel continues his search for materials: he finds the bad apples and rotten eggs. The Smurfs are suspicious of Gargamel, and return to the village to tell Papa Smurf what they saw. Papa Smurf suspects that he may be trying to build a giant, but tells them that he wouldn't be able to complete it without choke cherries, which don't grow anywhere in their part of the world.

Tuffy brags to all of the other Smurfs about his great fight against Azrael. Hefty then counters this by saying there were just two hits -- "Azrael hit you, Tuffy, and you hit the ground" -- driving much of Tuffy's audience away. Meanwhile, Gargamel now has all of his ingredients except for the choke cherries, so he substitutes smurfberries instead. Next, he builds a kite which he would fly during a thunderstorm in order to bring his giant to life.

The next day, Tuffy decides to go seek out Azrael, so that he can settle the score. Farmer observes Tuffy heading out of the village, and tells a few other Smurfs, who quickly realize what Tuffy is up to. Tuffy, meanwhile, does eventually run into Azrael, along with Gargamel and his now completed giant, Dufus. Tuffy tries to fight Azrael and loses, but Azrael ends up getting knocked out by the giant. Gargamel orders Dufus to attack Tuffy by dumping water over him, but they fail to stop him. Tuffy meanwhile, grabs the unconscious Azrael by the tail and begins dragging him back to the village. Gargamel and his giant slowly follow, expecting that Tuffy would lead them back to the Smurf Village. Eventually Azrael comes to, and tries to attack Tuffy, but the other Smurfs encounter him just in time, and Hefty once again manages to rescue Tuffy.

When Gargamel and Dufus reach the Smurf Village, they create havoc and destruction. The Smurfs fight back by launching smurfberry pies at them. Gargamel of course hates this, but Dufus actully likes it, and instead of attacking, eats the pies that are being hurled. When the Smurfs run out of pies, Papa Smurf orders all of them to evacuate and meet by the Great Oak Tree. When Gargamel tells Dufus to stomp the Smurfs, Dufus replies, "But Smurfs nice." Gargamel looks incredulously at Dufus, roaring "NICE? NICE?!? HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT?" Dufus replies, "They gave Dufus pies. Me no smash them; me want more pie." Finally, Tuffy throws a piece of rubble from a Smurf house on Dufus's foot, and Dufus starts hopping in agony through a field of smurfberry bushes, eventually landing on top of Gargamel's house. Later, Dufus returns to the Smurf Village to apologize for attacking their village, and to ask for more smurfberry pie. Tuffy is confused by Dufus's change of behavior, until Papa Smurf explains that this is due to the fact that Gargamel used smurfberries to create Dufus instead of choke cherries.

Dufus helps the Smurfs replant their smurfberry bushes, and repair the roof on a Smurf house. To thank him, Greedy makes Dufus an enormous smurfberry pie. Eventually, Dufus said that it was time to leave. Smurfette doesn't want him to go just yet and invites him to stay for supper, but he replies, "No thanks, Smurfette. Daddy wants Dufus home before dark."
