Grandpa Smurf is one of the characters that appears in Vic George's fanfiction story "Smurfed Behind: The Departure". Though much of his backstory is yet unrevealed, it is assumed that it shares some similarity with that of his cartoon show universe counterpart insomuch as that he has traveled the world for 500 years prior to his return to the Smurf Village. Around Empath's 155th birthday, Grandpa Smurf and Papa Smurf sought the help of Father Time when Snappy unearthed a baby dinosaur named Crinkles and needed to return him home to his own time period, and received from Father Time the Key Of Chronos that would open the vortex to carry the two Smurfs and Crinkles to the prehistoric era. Unfortunately, the key when it was activated drew in all the Smurfs that were in the village along with Grandpa and Papa, leaving only Polaris Psyche behind. During their time in the past, the Key of Chronos was destroyed, and Grandpa Smurf was able to save the chronosyte crystals that powered it, leaving Papa Smurf with the dilemma of how to arrange the crystals so that they could all get back home to their own time.
