  • It is the first episode in which Laconia the mute wood elf would appear. Her lessons in teaching the Smurfs sign language would become beneficial in later episodes.
  • "Smurfing in Sign Language" was co-written by story editor Patsy Cameron who is also an interpreter of the deaf. She has interpreted for former President Jimmy Carter's inauguration in 1977, and for Pope John Paul II when he addressed the masses in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. in 1979.
  • Considered a milestone as it is the first time that a sign-language using character (Laconia, the deaf-mute wood elf) appears in children's' animation.
