• The episode is based on a "Johan and Peewit" comic story titled Le Sortilège de Maltrochu (Maltrochu's Spell in English) which was published in 1967.

Goofs

• Animation error: When Papa Smurf and Peewit are walking in the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf's trousers are white instead of red.
• Continuity: The Smurfs are shown running pass the jailer after Johan knocked him over, but are shown in the next shot running pass him again up close.
• Continuity: There were six Smurfs that went into Maltrochu's castle, but in the scene when they passed the jailer (who was knocked over by Johan), only five of them are shown running pass him.
