"They're Smurfing Our Song" was an episode that appeared in Season 5 of the Smurfs cartoon show.

Summary

Woody is playing music for Laconia on his reed pipe. Laconia says in sign language that "their song" is the most beautiful song of all. The Smurfs meet up with Woody and Laconia while picking Smurfberries with the Smurflings. It is the first time Woody and Laconia have met Sassette. Woody plays a song on his pipe and explains that the elf who made his reed pipe cast a magic spell on it, so all who heard it would "be happy and want to be kind to others". Laconia suggests the Smurrfs come and visit them sometime, and Sassette responds that she would love to.

As the Smurfs leave Woody and Laconia, Gargamel overhears them! Gargamel begins to catch the Smurfs and put them in his stew pot, which he is carrying with him. Gargamel literally bumps into Bigmouth, who asks, "What Gargamel got in stew pot?" As Gargamel responds that he has nothing in the pot, the Smurfs escape! Bigmouth chases after Gargamel when the pot is revealed to be empty - and Sassette feels bad for "Pappy Gargamel". She wonders if there is some way she can help him be more happy...

That evening, Sassette borrows Woody's pipe to play a song for Gargamel. She is interrupted by "Detective Brainy Smurf", who demands to know why she is taking Woody's pipe. She explains that she will play the pipe for Gargamel as he sleeps and turn him into a happy wizard who will be "our pal". Brainy agrees to help when Sassette explains that the other Smurfs will idolize whoever turns Gargamel good. Before they can play a song, however, Gargamel grips onto the pipe as he sleeps. Sassette and Brainy must leave without the pipe! They run into Woody - who they did not ask permission from before leaving with his pipe. She confesses that she took the pipe.

When Gargamel awakes he reads the inscription on the pipe: "If upon this pipe you blow, the love within your heart will grow". He decides to bury the pipe so there is no chance he will use it! He then decides to put a new spell on the pipe - so whoever hears it will want to do bad deeds instead of good ones. He chants "All that is evil, through and through, please make this pipe turn cold and blue. So when its bitter notes I play, all loving thoughts will fade away". After the spell is cast, Woody tries to recapture the pipe. Gargamel plays the pipe and suddenly Woody turns surly and declares that he doesn't really want the pipe after all! Gargamel is delighted that his spell is working.

Woody returns to his home with Laconia and packs up his belongings. He tells Laconia he is tired of living with her and "who cares where I'm going as long as it's far away from you". Laconia cries as Woody leaves. Gargamel cackles evily as he walks through the forest with the enchanted pipe. Gargamel plays the pipe as he walks, causing dischord wherever he goes. Papa Smurf talks to Laconia and explains that the pipe has obviously been changed from good to evil. Papa declares that he must go to Gargamel's immediately and chant a reversing spell over the pipe. Papa says he will need Brainy and Laconia's help.

Meanwhile, Smurfs picking Smurfberries hear Gargamel's pipe and begin to feel its evil effects. Gargamel easily captures the fighting Smurfs. Brainy, Laconia and Papa Smurf arrive at Gargamels, who has captured many Smurfs thanks to his spell. Papa says it is time to put his plan into action, and dons a pair of earmuffs along with Brainy. Gargamel says he thinks he will make "hard-boiled" Smurfs, that way they will be ready to snack on any hour of the day or night. When Papa Smurf announces his presence, Gargamel starts playing the evil pipe. Brainy and Papa can hear the muffled music and try to resist, but Brainy cannot. He and Papa are captured, and it is up to Laconia, who cannot hear the music, to try and save the day.

Suddenly, Sassette arrives and declares her love for Pappy Gargamel. The pipe begins to smoke. Gargamel says that "no one has ever said that to me before, I can't bear it!", and he breaks down sobbing - Papa Smurf says that not even the evil within Gargamel could withstand the power of love. Laconia plays the pipe, and Gargamel releases the Smurfs. The spell has been reversed for everyone. Gargamel asks for forgiveness from Papa Smurf, which Papa grants.

Laconia encouters Woody again and plays the reed-pipe. The spell is reversed, and Woody declares to Laconia that they can "live happily ever after all over again".

Background Information

Goofs

  • Continuity error: Gargamel caught four Smurfs (Hefty, Clumsy, Farmer, and an unknown Smurf) with his net where they were picking Smurfberries and put them into his basket. Latter on inside his hovel, he captured Brainy and Papa Smurf and also placed them into his basket. After Sassette's expression of love for Gargamel broke his evil spell on Woody's reed pipe, its tune played by Laconia influenced Gargamel to free the Smurfs inside the basket. While Brainy, then Papa Smurf were freed by Gargamel, two of the original captured Smurfs (Hefty and Clumsy) were freed even though Gargamel caught four of them in the Smurfberry field. Also, when the Smurfs and Laconia left Gargamel's hovel, three of the original captured Smurfs (Hefty, Clumsy, and an unknown Smurf) are walking instead of four.
