"Wild and Wooly" was an episode that appeared in Season 5 of the Smurfs cartoon show.

Summary

The episode begins with Wooly, sharpening his shears, and explaining to the Smurflings that he is going to climb Molar Mountain to "rustle-up some wool!" so that all the Smurfs will have "warm duds to wear this winter". Sassette declares that it is Tailor who provides the clothes to the Smurfs, not wool from Molar Mountain. Wooly goes on to expalin that without the wool he provides, Tailor would have no material to actually make the clothing. Nat Smurfling is displeased that sheep must be sheared to provide the wool. Wooly expalins that he clips the wool humanely and that it "grows back good as new". Sassette asks if the Smurflings can accompany Wooly on his next excursion to obtain wool. Wooly declines but Papa Smurf suggests it may be educational for the Smurflings, to "learn the way of the Smurfs".

So the Smurflings and Wooly go off to Molar Mountain to get wool. Wooly declines Papa's offer of his magic kit before they leave. They will depart in the evening, on the first night of Spring, the Night of the Wool. Meanwhile, among humans, Gargamel overhears people talking of "elves" who take the very best wool and leave a basket of worthless berries. Gargamel knows immediately that they are talking about the Smurfs! He and Azrael decide to dress up in sheep's clothing to capture the Smurfs!

In the evenining, just before the Smurflings depart, Papa gives Nat his magic kit - just in case of emergency. Once at Molar Mountain, a father entrusts the care of the sheep to his son and their loyal sheepdog. Gargamel and Azrael arrive in disguise. Wooly begins his work. Despite his warning not to, the Smurflings join in as well. Gargamel attacks and captures Wooly while the Smurflings race to escape Azrael. A wolf appears, and the sheepdog takes chase!

Captured, Wooly is implored by Nat to use Papa's magic kit to escape. Ultimately, the sheepherder captures Wooly and threatens to turn him over to his father. Wooly employs the Smurflings to re-gather all the lost sheep that have been dispersed, in return for the sheepherder letting Wooly go. The Smurflings realize it is hard work to herd sheep! Puppy shows up to save the day. Wooly and the Smurfs ask to depart the mountain with their wool. The sheepherder explains that what the Smurfs are doing is theft - they have no use for the berries and "people can't wear berries when it gets cold". The sheepherder explains that gold is what they need - so Wooly uses Papa's magic kit to transform the Smurfberries into gold Smurfberries, and the Smurfs can take the wool. The sheepherder's dad says, "Son, you can tell your little friends they can come back any time they want".

Wooly, the Smurflings and Puppy return to the Village - each with a greater appreciation of one another.
